Image to text

Generate content from product images

Your product images already contain valuable information - colors, materials, details visible on labels, the way light hits fabric. Image to text lets AI analyze these images when generating content, turning visual information into accurate product data.

Enable Use images on any generatable attribute and AI will look at your product photos while generating content. Instead of guessing or working from limited text, AI sees what you see.

Why use image analysis

Instead of manually describing what's visible in your product photos, let AI extract colors, materials, and details directly from images. This creates accurate content in seconds instead of minutes. When you ask it to determine a color, it analyzes the actual photo rather than guessing from a product name or existing text.

Image analysis is particularly useful for accessibility. Generate descriptive alt text for every product image automatically, making your entire catalog accessible without writing hundreds of descriptions by hand. And if your products have packaging with visible text - ingredients, care labels, specifications, warnings - AI can read and extract that information directly into the right attributes.

How it works

AI uses different images depending on which attribute you're generating:

LevelImages Analyzed
ProductAll images associated with that product
VariantImages specific to that variant (falls back to product-level images if none exist)
AssetThat specific image

This smart selection means AI always has the most relevant visual context for what you're generating.

Enabling image analysis

Image analysis works with any generatable attribute. Open the attribute settings and enable Use images.

Once enabled, AI will analyze images every time you generate that attribute in a proposal. You don't need to do anything else - it happens automatically as part of your normal generation workflow.

Image analysis and proposals

Image analysis works when you generate attributes through proposals. The AI considers both your instructions and the visual information from images to create accurate content.

Viewing image usage in proposals

When reviewing a proposal, you can see which attributes used images during generation. This helps you understand how AI generated each piece of content.

Combining with instructions

Get the most from image analysis by pairing it with specific instructions. Tell AI exactly what to look for in the images:

Color identification

Determine the primary color shown in the product images

Material and texture

Describe the material and texture visible in the images, focusing on fabric weave and finish

Care instructions

Extract all care instructions from the labels visible in the product images

Alt text generation

Generate descriptive alt text that explains what's shown in this image for screen readers

Product features

List the key features visible in the images, including any text on packaging or labels

The more specific your instruction, the better AI can focus on what matters in your images.

Common use cases

New products without content - You have photos but no descriptions yet. Enable image analysis on your description attributes and let AI create initial content from what it sees.

Alt text for every image - Create an "Alt Text" attribute for assets with image analysis enabled. Generate alt text for your entire catalog to improve accessibility and SEO.

Extracting specifications - Product boxes and labels contain valuable data. AI can read measurements, ingredients, certifications, and warnings directly from packaging photos.

Color and material accuracy - Stop relying on product names to determine colors. Let AI analyze the actual photos to identify precise colors and materials.

Multilingual packaging - Product has text in multiple languages on the packaging? AI can extract information from labels regardless of language and use it to generate content.

Best practices

Better images lead to more accurate content. AI works best with clear, well-lit photos where details are visible. If you're generating care instructions, make sure label photos are included. For color descriptions, include close-ups that show texture and shade accurately.

Image analysis works alongside everything else in your catalog. Combine it with character limits and other attribute settings to get exactly the content you need. AI is powerful but not perfect, so review generated content through the proposal workflow and adjust your instructions if the results aren't quite right.
